Sidewalk chalk is fun and cleans up easily. So easy to make and fun to play with. Mix:

1 part Cornstarch
1 part Water
Food coloring

This is how I do it:

I put a whole box of cornstarch (3 1/2 cups) into my mixer and add 3 1/2 cups water and mix it. You can even do this with a hand mixer. I then pour it into those little wax coated paper cups and add 3 or 4 drops of food coloring to each cup. I keep a stirring stick in each cup because the cornstarch will tend to settle to the bottom of the cup. Use foam brushes to paint the concrete!

During the summer months, I am always trying out fun new things to do with the kiddos. I have decided to shared some of my favorites here! You can find a lot of recipes all over the internet. I have found my favorites and tweaked them so that they fit our family dynamic. Enjoy!

Kool Aid Play Dough

1 C. Flour
1/2 C. Salt
3 T. Vegetable Oil
2 Packets of sugar free Kool Aid (I use the brand name because the colors are brighter)
1 C. Boiling water (I use my tea kettle)

I do the easy thing and throw it all in my Kitchen Aid and mix it until it balls up. However, if you don't have a stand alone mixer, add the first four ingredients and mix with a fork. Then, pour in the boiling water. Continue mixing with a fork until it cools enough to handle. Knead it by hand on a counter top.

This dough will last a couple of weeks if you put it in air tight containers or zip lock bags and keep it in the fridge.

I am still not sure if this is a winner or a flop so I am putting it up on the blog and maybe I will tweak it later on. I am a penny pincher, but I like my kiddos to look cute. The other day I was at Target and saw these darling shirred tanks for girls. The price was $16 though and I wasn't about to spend that when I could come up with something on my own. This is what I did.

I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a T-shirt for $2, washed it and ironed it.

With my handy dandy acrylic guide, I measured up 6 inches from the hem and marked it with dressmakers chalk.
Now I didn't show this part but, you have to hand wind a bobbin with elastic thread and put regular thread through the upper threader. Sew along the chalk line that you have drawn. Make sure you back stitch over the first few stitches or all of the elastic threading will come out.

After you finish the first line of stitching and using your presser foot as a guide continue making lines around the t-shirt. I did about 8 and next time I would do about 6. Just do it so that the waist is the width that you want.

Next, fold your t-shirt in half (don't mind that my ironing board cover is disgusting!)

Place your acrylic marker as I have and make a line with dressmakers chalk. I placed the marker about 1/2 inch under the lowest part of the collar. Then, cut along the line that you have drawn.

Your shirt will end up looking like this.

I again, didn't take pictures of this, but starting about 1/2 to 1 inch from the top of the shirt, start sewing with the elastic thread in the bobbin and normal thread up top. I did about 3 lines and really liked the look.

I didn't like the look the look of the sleeves so I cut the sleeves about 1/2 inch from the armpit junction up to about an inch away the shirring up top.
And this is what you end up with. A cute, flouncy tank top.

Placemat Fabric Boxes

I am in the process of cleaning out my home and getting rid of things that I don't need. I happened upon this lovely stack of dollar store placemats that I bought at Christmastime thinking that I would make crayon rolls with them. They didn't work for that purpose but, I couldn't just throw them out. They are perfectly good fabric and you can't throw fabric out (I have a bit of a problem and probably need a fabric intervention.)

So, when I came across them yesterday, I looked at them wondering what I could do and it hit me to try a box. Now, these aren't show stoppers by any means but, they are fun, functional and you can whip up a ton in hardly any time at all.

You will need only a dollar store placemat (or more expensive if you really want) and a sewing machine. You might be able to do this with glue.... I am just too lazy to figure that out right now. The placemats are perfect for this because they are already lined and have the interfacing sewn in so you skip about 5 steps right there. Here is how to proceed:

Start with a placemat and iron it to get out all of the creases and wrinkles.
Fold your placemat in half and measure a 3" square in the NON FOLDED corner. Cut out the corner the square and repeat on the other side.
It should look like this when you are done.

When opened up, it should look like this.
Match up the sides of the cut out squares and line them up from the top edge down and pin into place. You will see your box begin to take form.

Sew down the edge about 1/4" in.

Zigzag stitch over the raw edge if you don't want it to fray. However, fray is in right now so, feel free to leave it be.

Press your small edge in on top of the box as shown and line up the bottom part of the previously made seams. Finger press the line between the two seams and stitch between the side seams (does that make any sense???)
It should look like this when you are done. Repeat on the other short side.
When the short sides are sewn. Fold over the long edge and finger press that crease. Sew between the previously made seams. Repeat on the other side. When you are done, it should look like this.
It will be a little flimsy but, it is perfect for entertaining for holding chips or rolls or even bread for toast.

Rolled Rosette

These fabric rosettes are all the rage and you see them everywhere. Although, I am sure that there are other tutorials out there, this is how I do it. Excuse me if the pictures are a bit off and if the instructions aren't clear. Leave a comment if you would like more detail.

I wanted to show how cute these rosettes are no matter what fabric you use. I chose an old vintage piece of gray, white and red. I didn't like it when I started but, I LOVE the finished product. This one is one of my favorites now!

Start off with a strip of fabric. I chose about 2" wide. Fold the tip into a triangle and press.
Place the tip of the triangle in the center of a square of felt (3x3) and stitch down about 1/2". Here is a tip. If your machine has a needle down feature, USE IT! This makes making these rosettes so much faster and easier!
After about 1/2 inch, twist the strip and turn it to go along side the triangle that you already sewed down.
Turn your felt square as you are sewing and sew along the middle of the fabric strip. Continue to twist your fabric and turn it around the center of your flower. Overlapping slightly will eliminate any chance that you will see your felt backing.
Continue to twist, turn and sew. Notice that my needle stays down the entire time.
Continue to turn around the center. Your flower will be getting bigger the more times you circle the center.

When you come to the size that you would like to have for your rosette, cut the remainder off of the strip of fabric.
Tuck the end under your rosette and stitch over that part concealing the end of your fabric strip.
Finished product on felt.

Flower Buckle

Goodness.... I think that I have fallen off the planet! I am sorry that I haven't posted in a week! Besides having some family issues, my camera has decided to go into early retirement. Lately, coaching pictures out of it has been a chore! I am thrilled that I (think that I) finally found a way to make my pictures stand out a bit more! We shall see.

This is a fun buckle (or whatever you use it for) that is quick and easy! I love it!

Start off by cutting 8 different petal shapes. On the straight end, curl it around to make a "S" shape.
Glue or stitch it in place and repeat that with all of the petals.
Glue the petals together on a piece of felt in the shape of an "X."
With the remaining petals, arrange them in the open spaces of the"X."
Finish all the way around.
Cut a small circle of fabric and clue it over the opening to hide the stitches.
Finish off by gluing a center in. I used a sunflower button. Love it! My daughter will be ready for summer with this fun number.
The possibilities are endless.

Pinwheel Flower Buckle

This is my favorite buckle at the moment. Really it is. I find myself staying up way too late at night making them just because I enjoy them so much. This is the one that I wore when I went on Studio 5. It is so much fun and so easy to make. They also look fantastic as hair clips and glued to headbands. Once you start, you will be hooked!

Aren't these fun as buckles! Really!
To start off you will need to have 16- 2 1/2" squares of fabric, a 3" square of felt, a center (large bead, button, fabric roses are my personal preference.) Start by gluing your center to middle of the fabric square.

Then take and pinch your square on the sides and then fold it in itself so that the center of the square becomes a point.

Dab a bit of hot glue (or fabric glue or you can sew it) on the point of the square and gently tuck it under the center. Do that four times around the center.
Then, take two more square and glue them on the inside edges of one of the openings.
Take one last square and glue it in the center of the last two "fans."

Repeat this around the entire center. You will end up with a great pinwheel design.
Turn the flower over and cut the felt around the edges of the hot glue so that you don't see the felt peeking out from underneath your flower.

For a different look, you can cut out circles instead of squares, alternate colors or both! For alternating colors, you will need 8 squares or circles of each color.
For alternating colors, glue down your center and glue into place 4 fans that are of the same fabric

With the coordinating fabric, glue one on either side of the opening.
Finish off with a final "fan" in the original fabric and repeat around the entire center.

This flower looks more like a flower than pinwheel. Cute, fun and just a bit different.

Twisted Fabric Rose

There are several tutorials out there on the web for these cute fabric roses. I am putting out how I do them because everyone tweaks their ideas with creativity. Right??? Also, I have to apologize for the fuzzy shots. My camera isn't wanting to work with me today! If these are unclear in any way, let me know and I will clarify.

Start by taking a strip of fabric 3"x18". Fold it in half and iron.

Tie a knot in one end.
Hot glue the short end to the underside of the knot.

Bring around the long and and hot glue to the SIDE of the knot.

Rotate the center knot 90 degrees and twist the fabric strip. Glue in place. Continue to turn and twist and glue at every quarter turn.

To finish off the rose, do one final quarter turn and flip and glue the end of the strip of the fabric to the bottom of the rosette.

The Ruffle Buckle

If you were watching Studio 5 yesterday, this is the buckle that we briefly demonstrated. This one is super easy and super fast. I love this one! This one is fun for all your belts PLUS looks fantastic clipped onto a jacket or a purse!

Start by starching and ironing a strip of fabric. I chose to do 44" by 3". This gives a VERY full flower. You don't HAVE to starch but, I think that it yields amazing results and keeps the puffiness and stiffness that I like. Fold the fabric in half down the length of the strip and press again.

Open it up and finger press it open. If you have a sewing machine, run a basting stitch down the crease. If you don't, simply run a long running stitch with needle and thread down the middle. When you are done, pull the thread to gather the fabric. (I cheated here and used my pleating foot on my machine. I love my pleating foot!)

Fold again over the original crease and iron flat.

Cut a 2 to 3 inch circle of felt.

Starting on the outside edge, run a small line of hot glue around the edge of the circle. Gently ease the ruffle around the edge where you have put your glue.

When you come around the beginning of your circle start gluing about 1/4 of an inch below the first ruffle.
Come around until you have just a small center opening.
Fill the center with hot glue. I put a decent sized pool of glue in there.

Roll up the remaining tail of your gather fabric as shown here.

Push in the roll that you have just made into the center of your ruffle circle. Tweak it a little so that the entire bottom edge is secured in the glue. Ta Da! Your ruffle is complete.

To attach the clip (This method will remain the same throughout all the buckles that we will be making. So, in future posts, I won't be repeating it.)

Cut an oval of felt about 1 1/2 long and 1/2 wide.

Notice the angle up side of the clip, that is the top side (just in case you weren't quite sure on that one ;)

Be generous with the hot glue and put enough on there to make the clip stick and clamp the clip over the top of the glue. Make sure that the glue is coming out through the TOP side of the clip.

Dab the underside of your buckle with glue.

Press the clip and the buckle together. There! You are done. To clip this onto your belt, simple slide it in the opening that is used to hold your D-rings. It fits perfectly there and the buckle is large enough to cover and hide your D-rings!

Making a Chic and Snazzy Belt

I am showcasing this tutorial as well as the buckle tutorial on Monday, May 10th on KSL Studio 5 at 11:00. Tune in to watch!

Tools Needed:

Fabric: For the length, measure around the hips of the person that the belt is intended for and add 8 inches. For the width, pick the width that you would like, double it and add one inch.

For this example, I cut the fabric across the fabric bias and ended up with 4” wide and 44” long. This will make a 1 ½” wide belt
(1 ½” doubled = 3inches plus one inch for seam allowance= 4” wide)

Fusible Fleece Interfacing: For this belt, I wanted a bit more stability so, we cut the interfacing 3” by 43”.
D Rings: They sell them in a 2 pack for less than a dollar at most Walmart or craft stores.

Additional Items: Spray Starch, Iron and Board, Sewing Machine.

Lets Get started!

1. Lay out your strip of fabric and iron it well. I use steam and spray starch. The starch makes the creases crisp and makes things look nicer.

2. On the wrong side of your fabric, iron on your piece of fusible interfacing.

3. Starting with the short ends, fold the fabric over the interfacing and iron into place.

4. Fold entire length of belt in half. Press it in place.

5. Staring on the short side at the middle crease, stitch the belt together as close to the edge as you can. Stitch all around of the edges.

6. Using your sewing machine foot as a guide, make two additional seams on the inside of first seams.

7. Make one more seam down the middle of the belt. This is a great chance to try out those fancy, decorative stitches on your machine!

8. Pull one end the belt through a set of the D-Rings about 1 ½” and stitch down. Go over the seam a couple of times to make it secure.

9. Now comes the fun part! There are so many fun ideas that you can use to make buckles for your belts. Find your favorite hair clip and slip it through the open loop below the D-Rings. Slip your new belt on and show it off.

5 Minute Chocolate Cake

I posted this about a year ago but, there has been an overwhelming desire for it lately so, I thought that I would post it again. This is one of my favorite recipes and...... the best part....... it only takes 3 minutes to make. Yep. That is it.

Last week, I promised my kiddos that we would make a treat but, I failed to pick up the right ingredients at the store. So, I did what any mother would do. I panicked and quickly racked my brain for something fun, fast, easy and yummy. You don't get any easier that this. It is almost more fun to make than it is to eat.

The kiddos loved watching their cakes rise in the microwave. I loved eating it. Now, it is terribly unhealthy but, oh so yummy. We love ours drenched in chocolate syrup.

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour

4 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa

1 egg

3 tablespoons milk

3 tablespoons oil

3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional but oh so incredibly worth it)

a small splash of vanilla extract

1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous). And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?

Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night! You are going to print this out straight away, aren't you? I don't blame you one bit!

I cherish it and it is one of the "few" baby items of her that I am hanging on to. I love this tutorial by Maya Made that gives instructions on how to make them. I am actually embarrassed to admit that I ran and took the pillowcase off of my own pillow (because it had a lacy edge) and immediately whipped one up. I think that they are so classic looking.
